Artist Statement

As a child my family transplanted to Paris, France for five years, and it was this experience living in the city of light that left an imprint on me as a lover of the arts. After my family returned to the Midwestern United States, it was the art classes and the outlet of creative expression that allowed for the transformation from artistic spark to be nurtured into a blazing flame, unlike anything else I had ever known. As life sometimes allows for, I lost my footing through the trial that was a major mental health crisis at age sixteen. It was not until in 2014, at age eighteen, that I reestablished my footing in life through a rediscovery of the arts. I painted profusely, and began to heal and explore who I was and how to find a place in this mad world. My work explores the spiritual engine that propels mankind forward through the seemingly inevitable brokenness of the human condition, even and most especially during the darkest of times. 

I create mixed media oil paintings, both abstract and representational, that have been described as raw, bold and visceral with a heavy emphasis on spiritual themes.

Artist Bio

Through Cohen’s exploration of existential themes of love, loss and resilience, she interprets the natural world in her art. Cohen embeds her dedication to the visceral, bold and honest in her paintings.  As an abstract expressionist, Cohen is highly intuitive in her process and plays with both vibrant colors and tactile textures. Additionally, she has been known to incorporate mirror and copper onto her canvases, materials that interact with light. “The process of creating has allowed me to explore spiritually and emotionally, and my love for the craft has fused with something intrinsic.”
