Artist Statement
I am an environmentalist artist, and my approach to creating is raw and explorative. Every mark has its own character and energy imbued within it. Art has catalyzed a metamorphosis in my life, and I am always receiving new insight when creating. Reflecting an autobiographical journey through its ever-evolving aesthetic, my art is embedded with both intentional and intuitive meaning through the application of my materials.
I am a mixed media abstract expressionist oil painter. My materials include: textured pastes, alcohol inks, spray paint, copper, mirror, recycled glass palettes, graphite, charcoal, recycled plastic, acrylic and oil paint. Some of my work has a three dimensional viewpoint. The gnarled and shadowed facets of my life as well as the uplifting and the transcendent are all incorporated within my mark making. Obsessed with how light interacts with the world, I have been known to include mirror and copper into the paintings, and the sun’s reflection often becomes a part of my compositions depending on the time of day. With mirrors particularly, the viewer truly becomes a part of the piece as well. With these elements, depending on the light and surroundings, the experience of even one work is ever changing.
In addition to my paintings, I write poetry, and I also have begun creating my “Trash Sculpture” From paint tubes, to plastic canvas wrappings, to broke paint brushes, to buckets,I have been slowly incorporating my waste into an experimental large-scale sculpture, thus recycling my studio refuse into more art. This project idea was conceived in early 2024, and right after the idea came to me, I stopped throwing away studio waste. The sculpture’s construction began in 2025, and is still ongoing. I am deeply devoted to my artistic expression, and I do not want any of my art’s byproducts to contribute to the trash crisis/ landfill crisis.
Art is my way of processing. When I paint, I am having a conversation with the world using the materials as my language. I merge these materials with my emotion, reaction to current events, my spirituality and my own individuality as a human being. My work is often layered with vibrant color, and I intend for my paintings to foster strong energies of hope and resilience.

Through her exploration of existential themes of love, loss and resilience, Cohen interprets the natural world in art, into which she embeds her dedication to the visceral, bold and honest. As an abstract expressionist, Cohen is highly intuitive in her process and plays with both vibrant colors and tactile textures. Additionally, she has been known to incorporate mirror and copper onto her canvases, materials that interact with light. “The process of creating has allowed me to explore spiritually and emotionally, and my love for the craft has fused with something deeply spiritual.” Cohen merges her passion for environmentalism with the arts, incorporating recycled plastic into her work. Her goal is to have as close to a 100% zero waste art studio as possible by 2027, through the vehicles of mixed media painting and art that she dubs as “trash sculpture.” Not only has Cohen healed from personal trauma, but she has found that art can also very much heal the global landscape, and is indeed very necessary for societal progress to take place.
