Artist Statement

Through abstract expressionist art, the work being created is embedded with both intentional and intuitive significance. Mixed media materials such as spray paint, ink, and graphite are often incorporated as a foundation, and the art is finished with oil paint. There is also an inclination for the art to embrace heavy texture, providing a multidimensional experience. The gnarled and shadowed facets of human experience and the uplifting and transcendent are incorporated. Intrigued with how light interacts with the physical world, copper and mirror are often integrated into the art. The sun’s reflection on a blue-skied day becomes a part of the composition through its interaction with reflective materials. For paintings that incorporate mirrors, there is a blurring of the separation of the viewer and the art itself through the capturing of the viewer’s reflection.

Through the process of painting there is a conversation being had with the world in both a micro and a macro scale. Often these paintings are embedded with reactions to current events, and also personal happenings.

Artist Bio

Through Cohen’s exploration of existential themes of love, loss and resilience, she interprets the natural world in her art. Cohen embeds her dedication to the visceral, bold and honest in her paintings.  As an abstract expressionist, Cohen is highly intuitive in her process and plays with both vibrant colors and tactile textures. Additionally, she has been known to incorporate mirror and copper onto her canvases, materials that interact with light. “The process of creating has allowed me to explore spiritually and emotionally, and my love for the craft has fused with something intrinsic.”
